What to expect:
Our classes generally follow the same format. There'll be a short warm up including some cardio and stretching. After that we practice basic movements individually, and then work on some self-defence techniques or exercises in pairs, followed usually by some padwork. In the second part of the class generally we split into groups by grade and work on techniques at each group's level. I try to keep a good pace and energy going throughout, so you will hopefully get a bit of a workout at the same time! We also practice a short seated meditation in every class.
Don't worry if you haven't done anything like this before. We'll start off slow so you can build up confidence gradually, and there will also usually be some friendly experienced members on hand to help you get the hang of things.
Try it today, and benefit from:
• Healthy body - through physical training and fitness work • Healthy mind - through meditation and eastern philosophy • Self defence - through self-defence techniques against strikes and grabs
What you need:
For your first class all you need is some water, comfortable gym clothing, and a photo ID card for the gym reception. Beginners are always welcome.
After you've been coming for a while you may like to get one of the white suits (a "dogi") to really feel the part. These can be purchased directly from the club starting at approx £20-25, but are not mandatory to begin with.
Insurance:
While we take safety very seriously, Shorinji Kempo is a physical martial art, and we practice light contact in every session. Insurance through the British Shorinji Kempo Federation (BSKF) is required for every participant. We provide the first month's trial insurance free of charge. After the first month you will be required to sign up for full annual insurance with the BSKF in order to continue training. The cost for this is £55 for the year (with concession and half-year rates available), and can be arranged directly with the instructor.
