Yin is the calm energy and stillness that restores some balance back to our busy lives (yang). In a yin class, the postures are hold for 2-10 minutes with the objective of allowing the muscles to relax in order to work into the deeper connective tissues of the joints. Yin yoga is based on meridian theory from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Gravity, props and time are used to work slowly with the body, rather than intensity of effort. It’s a highly meditative practice, cultivating awareness and control of the breath which helps to still the mind.
