About me: I first attended Hatha yoga from the recommendation of my college Councillor when I was 20.
This was 21 years ago. It was a home, a ground, a safe place for reflecting on who I was in the universe and still is.
I soon began Vini yoga where I worked one to one with Geoff Farrer weekly and daily self practice for some years. I then found Ashtanga Yoga, which I have practiced regularly though not devoutly ever since; I have trained in studios primarily with Richard Freeman qualified teachers around the world.
I love the richness of this practice, waking early and switching on to life in this way, feeling my skin opening through sweat and breath, my mind cleared of worry through the fast paced combination of breath and movement in a space without additional sound. I love the way it makes me see the world differently and the international community of devoted practitioners. But it has always made sense for me to combine it with other approaches.
Christopher Gladwell has been my most consistent teacher for 11 years. His approach has helped bring more honesty and kindness into my practice; to notice where I have been pushing into flexibility and actually hurting myself, where I need to build more strength and to be really clear about alignment, breath, and attention.
As well as teaching yoga I am a visual artist and performer and have trained in a variety of physical theatre, circus, dance and improvisation techniques, with emphasis on embodied and somatically informed practices, I have also taught contact improvisation, contemporary dance to over 55s and have led an improvisation based physical performer training called The Working Group. These other practices influence my teaching.
I have recently completed a 300 hour advanced teacher training with the Yogasara school of yoga led by Christopher Gladwell and Sarah Harlow.
As a teacher I want to create a supportive space for people to deepen their awareness of body mind, simultaneously moving towards acceptance of all experience with kindness and honesty as well as greater ease and joy.
