What is Pilates? Pilates is a conditioning system that co-ordinates mind and body. Pilates teaches you to become aware of your body alignment both statically and dynamically, and by targeting your deep postural muscles to work efficiently, it rebalances your body to restore alignment and posture, allowing you to move and feel better. Joseph Pilates (1883–1967) devised his method adapting aspects of other disciplines including yoga, gymnastics, and dance, to establish a balance between strength and flexibility training to produce toned, lean muscles. His techniques enticed a varied clientele including boxers, gymnasts, and ballet dancers. The ‘classical’ exercises that Joseph taught are skilled and beyond the capability of the average person.
