Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art which dates back to the early 1900s. In simple terms it combines the body movements of swordsmanship with the joint locks and throws of classical Jujutsu. Aikido focuses on concepts like internal strength and using an attacker's energy against themselves rather than relying on physical strength. In Aikido we do not have competitions as the art aims to foster co-operation and understanding above victory or failure.
We welcome complete beginners and seasoned practitioners alike.
You can wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes such as a t-shirt and jogging trousers. Feel free to bring a Keikogi (practice suit worn in martial arts like Aikido or Judo) if you already own one.
Aikido can be a strenuous activity but we don't require individuals to be of high fitness levels. You will be encouraged to practise within the safe limits of your own physical ability.
